Who Can Join the TGIF Committee?
We welcome both undergraduate and graduate students from any discipline to serve as voting committee members. The TGIF committee includes 8-10 students with an undergraduate majority. We also appoint up to 2 graduate students as well as staff members, faculty members, and ex officio representatives from the Council on Student Affairs and Fees (COSAF) and the Environmental Policy and Planning Commission (EPPC).
Guidance for Graduate Students
Graduate students serve as voting members or alternates on the TGIF Committee, bringing valuable research, professional background, and operational insight to committee governance.
How Graduate Members Contribute:
- Evaluate Proposals: Apply research and professional expertise to inform fund allocation decisions.
- Bridge Perspectives: Connect undergraduate and graduate initiatives across campus.
Represent Student Needs: Share personal academic insights to shape committee priorities.
*Graduate student committee positions become available less frequently than undergraduate positions. While we recruit undergraduate members each Spring to fill anticipated openings created by graduating students, graduate student recruitment occurs as positions become available and may take place at other times of the year than our standard Spring recruitment cycle.
Paid Student Role Overview
Eligibility
- Academic Standing: Open to undergraduate and graduate students of all majors in good academic standing.
- Enrollment Status: Open to all registered students of both full-time and part-time status.
- Service Commitment: Must commit to serving on the committee for at least one full academic year. Students are encouraged to continue serving through graduation, or for up to three years on the committee, whichever comes first.
Compensation & Expectations
- Stipend Award: $845 per quarter, disbursed at the end of each completed academic term.
- Time Commitment: ~5 hours per week (up to 50 hours per quarter).
- Core Responsibilities: Must be available for Wednesday meetings 12-1pm, subcommittee work, year-round tabling, and/or leadership tasks.
Weekly Committee Member Responsibilities
TGIF Committee members are responsible for stewarding undergraduate student fees and helping turn those resources into meaningful sustainability projects across campus. Our committee members meet in person every Wednesday from 12-1pm. All committee members are required to attend our weekly committee meetings.
In our weekly committee meetings, the Committee:
- Reviews and evaluates grant proposals to determine which projects align with TGIF's mission and funding priorities.
- Makes funding decisions and determines how available TGIF funds are allocated.
- Reviews project progress and outcomes by reviewing Midpoint and Final Reports.
- Supports funded projects by serving as TGIF Project Managers.
- Guides applicants and awardees to help strengthen projects and ensure successful implementation.
- Conducts outreach and engagement to help the UC Davis community learn about TGIF and its funding opportunities.
- Helps shape TGIF's future through program development, policies, outreach, and funding priorities.
Subcommittee Descriptions
In addition to their weekly Wednesday Committee responsibilities, each member serves on 1-2 subcommittees that carry out the day-to-day work of TGIF, including grant advising, marketing and outreach, committee recruitment and hiring, and program development.
Social Media, Outreach & Marketing
Members of the Social Media and Outreach Marketing (SMOM) subcommittee creatively advertise TGIF through tabling, fliers, social media, etc.. Subcommittee members manage TGIF's Instagram account and actively communicate with clubs and organizations to expand TGIF's reach. Experience with graphic design and social media is encouraged, but not required.
Grant Advising
Members of the Grant Advising subcommittee host Grant Advising Office Hours 1-3 hours per week to assist applicants in developing strong grant proposals. Members of this subcommittee gain a thorough understanding of the TGIF grant lifecycle to effectively answer grantee questions as they prepare their applications.
Membership
The Membership subcommittee organizes committee bonding events and leads TGIF Committee hiring during the Spring Quarter.
Project Management
Project managers work with TGIF-funded project leads to ensure their projects meet grant reporting requirements and follow projected timelines and budgets. Project managers act as liaisons between the committee and grantees, conducting regular check-ins to monitor project developments and offer support. While all TGIF Committee members often serve as project managers in some capacity, applicants with particular interest in project management may select this option on their application. Committee members who formally serve on this subcommittee are given more responsibility, such as taking on more complicated projects or spearheading the committee.
Student Officer Roles
Leadership positions expand upon standard subcommittee duties and are typically awarded to returning committee members. However, we encourage all applicants to express interest in their application for future consideration or if an opening becomes available.
Secretary
The TGIF Secretary takes meeting notes during each weekly committee meeting. They maintain records of committee process improvements, project discussions, project voting, and TGIF Bylaws. Each spring, the Secretary is responsible for reviewing TGIF Bylaws and proposing edits to the committee.
Treasurer
The TGIF Treasurer is responsible for helping the committee understand and steward TGIF's financial resources. They track expenditures, monitor the program budget, provide financial updates to the committee, and represent TGIF by delivering an annual budget presentation to the Council on Student Affairs and Fees (COSAF).
