The Cruess Cooling Pavilion is an outdoor installation using modular clay forms in geometric, nesting columns to create a bio-inspired, low-tech cooling system through evaporative cooling. This project enhances thermal comfort, shade, and fosters community building by offering a space for the community to relax and engage with the beautiful landscape. The project will also include a shade canopy made from sustainable materials to cool off the new upcycled furniture at the main entrance of Cruess Hall. The Cruess Hall Courtyard is a partnership between the Department of Design and the GATEways Horticulture and Teaching Gardens program. The project team plans to identify basket making plants such as grasses, rushes, willow, and bamboo varieties to grow in the Cruess Hall Courtyard for future student projects in the Design Makerspace workshops and sustainable design courses.
