Project description:

Satellite Mission is a research innovation project founded by UC Davis undergraduate students that are part of The Space and Satellite Systems Club. The project consists of creating The Remote Experimentation and Analysis of Low Orbit Phenomena (REALOP), UC Davis’s first ever satellite with a payload of a variety of sensors, including RGB and Infrared (IR) Cameras. The IR camera provides thermal images of the Earth while the Red-Blue-Green (RGB) camera provides full color images to provide context. By overlaying these two images over the course of the mission, it captures atmospheric phenomenon developing as a function of temperature with an additional ability to detect hotspots during the California fire season. Detecting some would serve as a proof of concept for a future UC Davis mission devoted to California fire detection, as more data can be collected and analyzed in such a way that yields desirable atmospheric and ground-based phenomena.
