In order to sustain a thriving tree canopy at UC Davis and throughout our region into the future, there is an urgent need to identify “climate-ready” tree species that will tolerate both our current climate and future conditions. This project supports the important planting phase of a multi-year research effort within the Arboretum and Public Garden Urban Tree Stewardship Learning by Leading Program. The effort consists of introducing and testing heat and drought tolerant trees from Texas on the UC Davis campus. The Texas Tree project plans to grow, plant, care for, and monitor 93 trees with the help of undergraduate apprentice and co-coordinator positions, along with student interns and volunteers. For more information, check out this article posted about the project. Information about the different tree species being planted and studied can be found on the Texas Tree Database.
