Project description:

This biodiversity research and education project is intended to support the UC Davis Arboretum Waterway Flood Protection and Habitat Enhancement Project by using camera traps (also known as motion sensor trail cameras) to collect data on the presence and distribution of animal species within and around the waterway. UC Davis students in the Arboretum and Public Garden’s Learning by Leading Program will collaborate with international Humphrey Fellow and wildlife conservationist Khatia Basilashvili to learn the scientific techniques and data analysis for project implementation, as well as design a post-project wildlife survey protocol that students will lead when the Waterway Enhancement Project construction is complete (estimated June 2023). This project aims to monitor wildlife before, during and after the Waterway Enhancement Project to increase educational opportunities and promote environmental awareness about sustainable development for UC Davis students and visitors to the Arboretum and Public Garden.
